Katie Grace was one of the RA’s in my freshman dorm at Gardner-Webb, about 6 years ago. She had this super spunky, carefree attitude that I admired and still do. I don’t know why but when I think of her I always picture her in jean overalls with paint splattered all over them. I think I’ve only actually seen her that way once but that’s the image I always get. And with her contagious laugh you can’t help but be overcome with joy when you’re around her!
KG graduated and moved back home (Winston-Salem, NC) and we kept up with each other through social media but didn’t get to speak much since she wasn’t living a floor above me anymore. She had gone off to marry this handsome and dapper gentleman named Chase. Awkwardly enough they met via Facebook by a random friend request, ‘stalking’ each other’s page and asking mutual friends about who the other person was. “One date led to another and the rest was history” – KG. Chase planned to surprise Katie Grace in her most favorite place on earth. A place where she spent a lot of time visiting and vacationing while she grew up and had explained all of her favorite childhood memories to Chase already, Hatteras Island, NC. Katie Grace and her sister were there one weekend in the spring of 2015 to run the Flying Pirate half marathon for the third year in a row. While Katie Grace was exploring the island one day that weekend, Chase surprised her when he came walking out of the base of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and hired a photographer to document his proposal. What a DREAM! I wasn’t there and I hadn’t met Chase but as soon as I saw that was how he proposed I knew instantly he was perfect for her because of how much I knew Cape Hatteras means to her! (See the pictures from that day here)
Fast forward a couple years and I get a message from KG telling me she has this idea for a couples session with her and her husband on their newly purchased land where they are going to build a house on! All these ideas come rushing to my mind as I continue reading her message. We are so in sync with the same vision it’s unreal. God is awesome.
Of course I’m over the moon that they chose me to document this special chapter in their lives and what perfect timing as I’m transitioning from a sports photographer to a wedding photographer. The night before the session an idea popped into my head to do a picnic theme and when your client is also creative the ideas are limitless.
I pull up to the land and I’m there a little bit before they are so I get to scope out the lighting situations and let my creative juices start flowing. When KG and Chase pulled up (remind you that I haven’t seen Katie Grace in about 5-6 years) she ran towards me and we embrace with huge smiles and “I’ve missed you’s” and “I’m so glad you’re here!” and I was finally able to meet her sweet husband (who is a trooper by the way for a guy who “totally enjoys” taking pics haha!).
The day was just perfect, the lighting was amazing and the whole flow of the session had me on cloud 9 all night. We finished up the session on their land and the golden hour was too perfect to waste that I wanted to find a huge open field to get beautiful glowing images at sunset. We thought for a minute and KG came up with an idea – so I followed them down the road a bit and we pulled off at this open field and man that sunset glow did not disappoint.
In a year’s time we will be back at their newly built house with a lifestyle couples session.
